Consultation

This is, of course, the cornerstone of General Practice!

Consultation is by appointment. To make an appointment, please telephone the Health Centre at 01360 550339 where the receptionist will arrange for you to be seen.

All urgent problems are dealt with on the day. We endeavour to offer a same-day appointment for all other problems, whenever possible. The Receptionists are also there to receive your requests and comments. They may ask for brief details of your situation to help the doctor judge the best way to help.

House Calls

Traditionally, home visits have always formed part of the general practitioners daily schedule, though in the past this was much more onerous due to the scarcity of personal transport in the general population. Usually, it is preferable to see and treat patients at the surgery as facilities are far better. We realise, however, that sometimes patients can be too ill to attend the Health Centre and are generally happy to attend patients at home after a brief telephone assessment by the doctor. Where the condition of the patient does require a house call please try to let us know before 10.00am as it will enable us to plan accordingly. Of course, illness is unpredictable and we will attend emergencies throughout office hours.

Please bear in mind that a rash or temperature does not prevent patients coming to the Health Centre and will not endanger others. Simply tell the Receptionist on arrival.

Health Promotion

The aim of promoting health is to try to identify risk factors at an early stage and prevent them from causing ill health. For this reason we will ask about drinking alcohol and smoking habits and measure your blood pressure and weight from time to time. This is especially wise in people with a family history of Heart Disease, Diabetes and Stroke.

We are currently in the process of setting up chronic disease management clinics. These will be run jointly by the doctors, practice nurse and community nursing staff and cover areas such as heart disease, asthma/chronic bronchitis, high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).

Repeat Prescription

If you are on long term medication your doctor may provide a repeat prescription. Phone 01360 550095 at any time and leave your request on the answering machine. Your prescription can be collected within 24 hours. If you wish to collect your medication direct from a local pharmacy (Killearn, Balfron or Strathblane) just make this request when you are leaving your message on the answering machine.

Accidents and minor surgery

We may be able to save you that dreaded trip to the local Casualty department!

The Doctors are equipped to offer treatment for accidents and emergencies and to perform minor operations where they feel it is appropriate in the patient's interest.

Laboratory Specimens and Test Results

Specimens are sent to the laboratory on Monday to Friday. If you are asked to bring a sample on those days please ensure we receive it before 11am. Patients should add their name, date of birth and address to the sample.

Results may be obtained by telephoning 01360 550339 between 12 noon and 4pm. The Receptionist may then inform you of the result or she may ask you to arrange an appointment with the Doctor or the Practice Nurse to discuss the result. It is practice policy only to give results of medical tests to patients who are 16 or over and to the parents of those below this age.

Medical Examinations

Medical Examinations for special purposes such as Insurance, Pre-employment, Driving etc., are undertaken outside normal consulting hours. A fee will be payable. Please contact 01360 550339 to make an appointment and be advised of the current fee.

Physiotherapy, Chiropody, Speech Therapy & Dietician

These services are available on-site and the doctors/ nursing staff will usually refer you for treatment, if appropriate.

Specialist Referral

It may become necessary for you to be referred to a specialist for assessment and/or treatment. To this end, we maintain close links with the local hospitals. Depending on the required specialty, we are able to offer a choice of several referral hospitals: Stirling Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital and the Western Infirmary in Glasgow, the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and, in some instances, the Southern General Hospital and Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow.

If you seek treatment within the independent sector, we can liaise with the Nuffield Hospital and Ross Hall hospital in Glasgow, as well as Kings Park hospital in Stirling.
